Viviana Ruz M.

CERAMIST ARCHITECT
“My works inhabit the middle ground between the utilitarian and the sculptural.”

I come from a large Rancagua family, full of artists. I grew up surrounded by the paintings and sculptures of my father and his artist friends. It was a house full of colors and shapes. So, with the help of a brush, I learned about color and the power of form, experiencing art on a daily basis. My mother, a ballet teacher, taught me the capabilities of the body and the beauty of movement, which is somehow also reflected in my pieces.

I'm grateful to grow up in a world filled with a sensitivity for beautiful things and the constant learning of experiencing art as a limitless everyday life, and that beauty also resides in the domestic. I was similarly interested in architecture, which is the poetic dwelling of man; the everyday is poetic. And ultimately, my lived experiences, some more intense than others, shape the contours of my work.

I began my relationship with ceramics about 20 years ago. I trained in various workshops and with different ceramists, from which I lovingly rescued and embraced ancestral modeling techniques, which, when adapted to my personal version, have allowed me to create large sculptures and achieve my own unique design. Furthermore, the use of glaze gave me color, shine, and light, and the basics of the wheel gave me the structure that has helped me so much to give height to my pieces. With all this, I now work in stoneware ceramics with even greater passion and respect.

Arriving at Ruth Krauskopf's Huara Huara workshop was a leap into the void, like starting from scratch. The end of condescension and my creative stage began with a purpose; it was here that I found my artistic path. Ruth truly challenged me to take ceramics as an essential part of my life. Her training fostered in me the passion for form, color, and movement that I show today in my works. She also encouraged my love of shine and light to use them fearlessly in each piece. My seal. I can say that today my works "are me," with all my joys and sorrows reflected in the form, color, and shine. With all these elements, "Objects of Contemplation" was created.
